🚼 On Beginnings: Why They Suck

Salaam friends,

The first story I wrote was about a girl struggling with her faith. I can't remember why I wrote it from a girl's perspective. I can't even recall what inspired the story. But, upon completing the first draft, I felt a sense of accomplishment as if I had finally become a writer. I only shared the story with my wife, who provided me with valuable criticism to start my second draft. After finishing the second draft, I submitted the story to The New Yorker. I was certain they would respond, eager to publish my work before I considered other options. Unfortunately, it seems that they may have lost my email and forgotten to contact me amidst their busy schedules.

I set that story aside and began working on something else. This time, the story revolved around a boy and was set in 1960s Colonial Aden. Upon completing the first draft, I felt like I was no longer the writer whose mediocre prose went unnoticed by The New Yorker. I dedicated an entire year to crafting my second story, submitted it to the Hunter MFA program, and got accepted. With each new story I wrote, I noticed my skills, imagination, and confidence growing. I also realized that each project brought a sense of discovery.

It is this sense of discovery that drives most of us. We embark on a project without knowing its true direction, unsure of its value, ignorant of its depth. We only realize its full potential in retrospect. This is why beginnings are always the most challenging phase of any endeavor. It involves both acquiring new skills and dealing with the lingering voices of uncertainty. But Doubt never disappears. I have spoken with published writers, some with prestigious awards, and yet they remain as doubtful as any other writer. The difference lies in their experience. They have come to understand that the process itself is what matters. As long as you strive to discover what you are creating while creating it, you'll surprise both yourself and others.

🎧 What am I listening to?

I’m listening to Tim Ferriss Show on how he built his podcast, and the best tips for beginners. Tim is someone I have been listening to for year, because of his keen eye on deconstructing processes.
